SPOKANE — As with any coach, looking for the little things is something Meredith Richards does regularly with the Cheney girls’ basketball team.
It’s just that it takes more than that Richards found as the Blackhawks lost a pair of Greater Spokane League games last week, Jan. 21 at Mead, 74-22, and at Lewis and Clark, Jan. 24 by a 59-35 count.
“(We’re) getting a little better every time we step on the court,” Richards wrote in an email.
Richards saw that against LC at Squinty Hunter Field House where Cheney (0-5 GSL, 4-14 overall) trailed by single digits, 40-32.
“I think that we got tired both mentally and physically and gave up 19 points to our four,” Richards said as Cheney lost for an eighth consecutive time.
Kayelee Kohlman led Cheney with 11 points, while Mia Ashcroft added eight.
“It was definitely a heartbreaker,” Richards said. “We were hoping for that win to boost us through the next two weeks and difficult opponents.”
At Mead, “We just struggled to take care of the ball and stop their outside shooters,” Richards said.
The GSL co-leading Panthers raced to a 28-6 first-quarter lead and were up 52-17 at halftime. Ashcroft hit double figures for Cheney with 10 points, shooting 80% from the floor.
That stretch of games Richards referred to which closes out the regular season began with a Jan. 28 home game with Gonzaga Prep (2-3, 10-6) and a visit from undefeated co-leader Central Valley (5-0, 16-0), Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m.
