Use common sense to protect girls in athletics

Series: Guest Column | Story 53

I am deeply committed to ensuring that our state’s policies promote both fairness and common sense, especially when it comes to opportunities for youth. It is with these guiding principles in mind that I have introduced Senate Bill 5097, a measure designed to safeguard competitiveness and equity in girls interscholastic athletic activities.

Girls sports have been a cornerstone of public education in our state, offering young women invaluable opportunities to excel, develop discipline, and foster essential life skills such as teamwork and perseverance. These activities not only contribute to physical and mental well-being but also open doors to scholarships and leadership opportunities. For many, participation in sports is a transformative experience that shapes their future in profound ways.

However, the foundation of these opportunities rests on a critical principle: fair competition. Without clear guidelines and enforcement, the integrity of girls’ sports is at risk. Senate Bill 5097 aims to address this by ensuring that the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and similar entities have the authority to establish and enforce rules that maintain fairness in girls’ athletic programs. By codifying this responsibility, the bill seeks to protect the level playing field that is essential for meaningful competition.

Safety is another vital consideration. Interscholastic sports often involve rigorous physical activity and, in some cases, direct physical contact. Ensuring that all participants compete under fair and equitable conditions is not only a matter of fairness but also of physical safety. When the competitive balance is disrupted, it can lead to unintended risks for student-athletes, undermining the protective measures we have worked so hard to implement.

Some may ask why this legislation is necessary. The answer lies in our responsibility as policymakers to provide clarity and consistency in how athletic programs are governed. The absence of clear standards can lead to confusion and conflict, detracting from the positive experiences that sports are meant to provide. Senate Bill 5097 offers a straightforward solution by affirming the role of the WIAA in upholding fairness and safety in girls sports. This approach respects the expertise of the association while providing the legal framework needed to support its efforts.

It is important to emphasize that this legislation is not about exclusion or discrimination. Rather, it is about ensuring that all athletes can compete on a level playing field. By establishing clear guidelines, we can promote inclusivity while preserving the integrity of competition. This balance is essential for fostering an environment where all students feel valued and supported.

The benefits of fair competition extend beyond the playing field. When students know that their hard work and dedication will be rewarded equitably, they are more likely to develop confidence and resilience. These qualities serve them well not only in sports but also in academics, careers, and community involvement. By protecting the integrity of girls’ sports, we are investing in the future success of our young women and, by extension, the future of our state.

Senate Bill 5097 is a proactive measure that reflects our commitment to the values of safety, fairness, and opportunity. It recognizes the unique challenges faced by student-athletes and seeks to address them in a thoughtful and equitable manner. By enacting this legislation, we can ensure that girls’ sports remain a source of empowerment and inspiration for generations to come.

I invite my colleagues, educators, parents, and community members to join me in supporting this important step. Together, we can uphold the principles that make interscholastic athletics such a vital part of our educational system. Let us work together to create an environment where every student-athlete can thrive, compete, and achieve their full potential.

The passage of Senate Bill 5097 is not just a step forward for girls’ sports; it is a reaffirmation of our commitment to fairness and safety for all. Let’s ensure that our daughters and granddaughters have the same opportunities to succeed as their peers, and let’s do so in a way that honors the values we hold dear. This is about more than sports—it is about the future we want to build for all our children.
