Schools respond to immigration enforcement

CHENEY – The School District is responding to recent changes in federal immigration policies and reaffirming its commitment to a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students, regardless of their immigration status.

On Tuesday, the district said it is obligated to offer free, high-quality education for all students living within its boundaries.

Both state and federal laws prohibit discrimination based on race, color, national origin or immigration status.

Last week, the state Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction issued updated guidance to districts, providing information on student privacy protections, access to educational services and the handling of immigration enforcement on school campuses.

The update was in response to President Donald J. Trump’s vow to remove illegal aliens from the country.

“Washington State is and will remain a state that is unequivocally committed to supporting all of our students and their families,”State Superintendent of Public Instructoin Chris Reykdal said.

He isn’t the only state official to react to stepped up immigration law enforcement.

Gov. Bob Ferguson signed an executive order Monday creating a team within the Department of Children, Youth and Families to help children of illegal immigrants separated from parents due to deportations.
