Washington ranks 51st in officers
OLYMPIA – A bipartisan effort to address Washington's police shortage advanced today as the Senate Law and Justice Committee approved Senate Bill 5060. Sponsored by Senator Jeff Holy, R-Cheney, the bill proposes a $100 million state-funded grant program to help local and tribal governments hire law enforcement officers.
Washington state is ranked 51st in the nation for the number of police officers per person. The state also ranks high in crimes like murder, car theft, and retail theft.
