Titans shine in first-ever league meet
University High School’s girls wrestling team made history on Jan. 14, hosting the first-ever Greater Spokane League (GSL) girls dual meet against Cheney High School. The Titans showcased their strength, earning a decisive 52-27 victory over the Blackhawks.
“I’m proud that the sport of girls’ wrestling is getting more spotlight time where the girls get the full dual experience,” Cheney head coach Jeremy McGee said.
The dual meet began with the teams tied 12-12 after the first four weight classes — 190, 235, 100, and 105 — all ended in forfeits. The Titans broke the tie with a forfeit win at 110 pounds, taking an 18-12 lead they never relinquished.
University dominated the middleweight classes, winning four of five bouts during a critical stretch. Skylar Buckner, a standout sophomore at 135 pounds, earned a 4-0 decision to extend the Titans’ lead.
“Skylar is a super strong sophomore that is not only fun to watch but is finding her way and getting better,” McGee said.
The Titans continued to build momentum, with additional wins at 140, 145, and 155 pounds. Kathryn Ambute-Gibson capped the night with a hard-fought 10-4 victory over Cheney’s Skylar Buckner in what McGee called an “epic match.”
University’s head coach praised the team’s effort in making history. The meet highlighted the rapid growth and increasing visibility of girls wrestling in the Greater Spokane League.
The Titans carried their confidence into a Jan. 15 matchup with Lewis and Clark High School, showcasing their depth across weight classes.
While Cheney rebounded with a strong 51-15 win over Lewis and Clark the following night, University High’s historic performance in the inaugural GSL dual meet solidified its place as a powerhouse in girls wrestling.
