Scotties earn notable wins in scuffle
Freeman used three pins to score a 67-0 Northeast 2B South wrestling victory, Jan. 15.
Colin Bailey began the string at 144 pounds with his win by pin in 3 minutes, 35 seconds. Lincoln Wright (165) got his win in 3:25 and Michael Valente (215) used just 1:32 for his decision.
Bearret Murphey won a major decision, 10-1, at 126 while Wylie Patzlaff (132) followed with a 16-7 victory. Quincy Paxton breezed to a 16-0 technical fall win at 138.
Chase Svelmoe had the closest bout of the match, winning 15-12 at 157 pounds and Noah Baker prevailed 5-2 at 285.
In “extra” matchups, Valente (215) and Baker (285) both scored second pins in what are considered exhibitions.
The Scotties started the match with three consecutive forfeit wins at 106, 113 and 120 pounds and and later had similar triumphs at 150, 175 and 190.
The Scotties also participated in the South Hill Scuffle, Jan. 20 at Ferris High, earning four first-place finishes.
Colin Bailey pinned his opponent at 143-150 in 4:21. Quincy Paxton won by decision, 4-0 at 137-140 pounds, Tucker Hawk scored a tense 1-0 win in the 147-152 weight and Giovanni Sutherland earned a 15-10 decision at 174-185.
No points were kept but wrestlers who competed were put into brackets and earned medals for finishes from first through fourth.
Freeman is 3-0 in league competition and the team is heading a “dead week,” reported head Coach Matt Smith.
“We won’t have any competition until senior night on January 28,” Smith wrote in an email. “The following Saturday (Feb. 1) we will have our first qualifying tournament for the postseason in Colfax.”
