Blackhawks rebound, top LC

Cheney takes third at Westberg

SPOKANE - Cheney boys wrestling collected an important Greater Spokane League dual meet victory Jan. 15 that keeps them in the hunt for a regular-season title.

Then the Blackhawks kept their state profile high with a third-place finish at the Ray Westberg Invite at Ellensburg, Jan. 18.

"We responded well after a loss last week vs. Mead," head coach Brian Staff wrote in an email. "We came out and wrestled well."

The Blackhawks sit at 3-1 in GSL competition, trailing 6-0 Mead following a 65-15 victory over Lewis and Clark where Cheney raced to four consecutive wins, two from pins to open the event from Alex Kurakin (113 pounds/1:44) and Camron Bogle (132/3:21.

"The highlight was CJ Bogle at 132 with a pin over Kaden Norris," Staff said. "We beat him at Freeman Tournament, we lost to him at Cheney Invite so we got a chance to avenge our loss and are 2-1 against Kadyn Norris."

LC's win at 138 pounds might have stopped the initial Cheney streak but it set in motion a run of wins in seven of the next eight weight classes.

Hank Ghering (144) pinned his opponent in 3:35 and Jackson Syron (150) captured his pin victory in 2:30 and upped Cheney's lead to 36-3.

Aiden Stark (165/2:21) and Cooper French (175/1:10) both captured pin victories. Trenton Moore (215) had a 20-4 technical fall in 5:35 and Gauge Seubert (285/2:30) concluded with a pin.

At the Westberg Invite Cheney finished third with 195.5 points behind Wapato (344.5) and Hermiston (205.5).

"This is one of the best (tournaments) in the area," Staff said. "We can get a good idea on how we are going to respond the rest of the year based on our performance here."

That effort was led by Jackson Syron who won at 150 pounds as did Trenton Moore in 190 with Aiden Jackson (126) and CJ Bogle (132) both runners-up. Ashton Shephard (126), Wyatt Wells (175) and Gauge Seubert (215) were all third. Moore in now a two-time Westberg champ.

"Our boys wrestled as well as we could of and probably better than we could of," Staff said. "That's nice to see this time of the year."

Cheney tested that notion with a match Jan. 22 at University (4-1) and at home Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. vs. Shadle Park (2-4) for Senior Night. The Blackhawks travel to the Walla Walla Tournament, Jan. 25 with competition beginning at 9 a.m.
