Cheney girls lose two games

A pair of losses for the Cheney girls’ basketball team last week produced continued glimmers of progress.

The Blackhawks lost their final non-league game at home to Lewis and Clark, 51-40, Jan. 7 at home and the Greater Spokane League opener at Ferris, 70-41, Jan. 10.

Tied at halftime at 21, Ferris dominated the final two quarters outscoring Cheney (0-1 GSL, 4-8 overall), 49-20.

“Something shifted,” head coach Meredith Richards wrote in an email. “Ferris came out in a press and we lost composure and didn’t focus on taking care of the ball.”

Isabell Weed’s 12 points were tops for Cheney with Mairyn O’Regan also in double figures with 10.

“Our girls battled on the boards for this game, offensive rebounding being a huge part of why we were tied at halftime,” was the plus Richards took away from the game.

Stone-cold shooting in the second quarter where Cheney was outscored 14-4 proved to be the difference vs. LC.

Natalie Richards and Kayelee Kohlman each had 12 points and Izzy Weed added another 10 for the Blackhawks.

“Izzy is really stepping up this season and finding her confidence on the court,” Richards said, noting that Weed also shot a perfect 100% from the field against the Tigers.

The Blackhawks had a home game with University, Jan. 14 before playing its next three on the road with Mt. Spokane (Jan. 17), Mead (Jan. 21) and Lewis and Clark (Jan. 24).
