CHENEY — The Cheney boys basketball team closed out the non-league portion of its schedule with a win and opened Greater Spokane League play falling in overtime last week.
At home for the first time since late December, Cheney topped Lewis and Clark 58-42, Jan. 7 and lost in overtime at Ferris, 57-56 on Jan. 10.
Behind Liam Carver’s 15 points and 12 from Kade Adderly, the Blackhawks led 32-27 at halftime and pulled away from the Tigers with a 20-8 third quarter edge.
“We played a complete game on the defensive end and the boards which allowed us to be successful on the offensive end,” head coach Travis Peevey wrote in an email.
A shorthanded Cheney team traveled to Ferris where the Saxons 10-8 fourth quarter earned them the tie in regulation. Cheney led 30-28 at halftime.
“We knew it would be tough to go into that environment for our first league game and fell just short in a game that could’ve gone either way,” Peevey said.
Juleon Horyst led Cheney with 21 points while Grayson Burton added another 16.
Cheney (0-1 GSL, 4-8 overall) had a home game with University, Jan. 14 before playing its next three on the road with Mt. Spokane (Jan. 17), Mead (Jan. 21) and Lewis and Clark (Jan. 24).
