Blackhawk wrestlers go 1-1

CHENEY — The Cheney boys split a pair of Greater Spokane League wrestling matches busting Mt. Spokane 39-28, Jan. 8 but being smothered by defending state 3A champ Mead 68-4 for following evening.

The Blackhawks (3-1 GSL) won their first six weight classes vs. the Wildcats

Of those, three were pins and included Jacob Estock (165) in 1 minute, 2 seconds, Cooper French (190) in 1:01 and Trenton Moore (215) in just 37 seconds.

“This was an important match and we needed a win here if we were going to win the dual,” head coach Brian Skaff wrote regarding the Estock win which was bitter-sweet.

Estock broke his foot in the match and still finished with a pin.

Cheney’s run started at 157 pounds with Jackson Syron’s 18-5 major decision and followed by Wyatt Wells’ 13-10 win at 175 pounds and an 8-3 win by Gauge Seubert at 285.

“Wyatt Wells came up with a big win as well,” Skaff said. “He had the kid on his back a few times but couldn’t get the pin.”

Mt. Spokane collected wins at 106 and 113 before Aiden Carr’s pin in 3:43 at 120. Camron Bogle (132) concluded Cheney’s evening with a technical fall, 18-0.

“We came out and just wrestled flat after a big win the night before,” Skaff said of the mashing from Mead. “We have to be better after a dual win and not be satisfied.”

Cheney had one win at 150-pounds by Jackson Syron beating Lars Weaver 19-5.

After the match the Blackhawks held a team meeting without coaches. “I’m encouraged by the hard work I’ve seen since then,” Skaff said.

Cheney returned to GSL competition Jan. 15 at Lewis and Clark and travels to Ellensburg Saturday for the Ray Westberg Invite.

“This is a great tournament with lots of good teams and wresters from the West Side and Mid Valley of Washington,” Skaff said.

Cheney girls

Meanwhile, the Cheney girls wrestling swept past Mt. Spokane Jan. 8 at home 29-0 earning four wins via pins and another with a technical fall.

Jennifer Tian (115 pounds) needed just 1 minute, 42 seconds to claim her win. Jalisca Holmgren (130) amassed enough points to win 15-0 in a technical fall.

At 130 pounds, Paige McGee won her bout in 1:14, Skylar Buckner (140) needed just 46 seconds for her pin and Ren Schaber (235) did likewise in 4:50.
