Cheney has solid tournament finishes

Cheney boys wrestling will make its return to Greater Spokane competition with a pair of solid holiday-break tournament finishes under their belt.

The Blackhawks earned a third place at their own invitational, Jan. 4 with 185.5 points behind Wapato's 336. Earlier at the Freeman Winter Classic on Dec. 30, Cheney finished with 143.5 points, behind West Valley's 174.5.

Trenton Moore was a champion at 190 pounds at the Blackhawk, while Cooper French (190) and Gauge Seubert (215) were runners-up.

That result set up an oddity of a final where Moore faced teammate French and won with a pin in 1 minute, 58 seconds.

For Moore, this was his second tournament win in a week, the first at Freeman. There he was joined on the top of the podium by CJ Bogle (132) and Seubert.

"Since it was our tournament, we put all our wrestlers in and had 11 place in the top-6 individually," head coach Brian Skaff wrote in an email. Aiden Carr (120) and Kaden Rasmussen (150) both earned third-place finishes.

Cheney was busy out of the break and looked to improve on a 2-0 Greater Spokane League dual-meet record facing both Mt. Spokane (Jan. 8) and Mead (Jan. 9) both at home.

"With injuries we are looking to get back Mason Bennett, returning seventh place state placer at 144 and Jackson Syron, Tri-State placer," Skaff said, making the Blackhawks "Even more competitive."

Skaff said his wrestlers look forward to January. "This is when we start to get into the grind of our season and face more competitive duals and tournaments."
