Hawks place 10 wrestlers in top 3

CHENEY - The Blackhawks girl's wrestling team made the best of hosting their first annual Tie Dyes and Takedowns Invitational, Dec. 14.

Cheney had 10 wrestlers place in the top-3 and four of those came away as champions sporting their new tie-dye singlets.

In addition, the Blackhawks added a pair of consolation titles in separate competition.

Head coach Jeremy McGee singled out several high points in an event that saw his team also capture the team title, 191 to 175 over Sunnyside.

Jenny Tian had a rematch against rival Savannah Taylor a state placer from Rogers.

"Jenny lost a close one earlier this season," McGee wrote in an email. "She had a dominating match getting a takedown a few turns and then pinning her in the second round," in a time of 3 minutes, 42 seconds.

Skylar Buckner bumped up to 145 pounds and made it to the finals for the first time in her career.

"She had a great match against a senior from Lewis and Clark," McGee said. "Skylar will be one to watch this year."

Ren Schaber is new this year and came through with a clutch pin in the first round in the finals at 235 pounds. The match ended the tournament on a high note and secure helped secure the team win.

"We are getting team points from first-year wrestlers pointing us in a position we could not have been last year as a team," McGee said.

And the returning three from last season, Tian, Jalisca Holmgren and Paige McGee who carried Cheney in the post season all ended up on the top of the podium.

Paige McGee placed first at 140 pounds and Holmgren remained undefeated with a win at 125.

Ireland Chodorowski (155) placed third. Addison Lathrop (130) and Sophia Pasion (155) were the consolation bracket winners.
