Student club helps needy local families
CHENEY – The high school's Future Business Leaders of America club distributed more than 800 gifts to 200 indigent families Dec. 13 at the high school.
In the weeks leading up to the event, chapter members placed donation boxes at businesses across the area, collecting clothing, toys and essentials for children and families.
Led by chapter President Rylan Rajewski, students partnered with the community outreach center, five local businesses in Cheney and Airway Heights, and schools.
Families were invited to attend "Santa's Trailer Shopping Day" last Friday, where they were greeted with festive activities including free gift wrapping, photos with Santa and hot chocolate with candy canes.
"I'm very proud of the hard work our students did to plan, organize, and host this event," club adviser Amelia Gubler said. "Santa's Trailer Shopping Day was well supported by our community, with 40 student volunteers, $2,000 in donations, and countless gifts contributed by local businesses and residents.
"Just over 200 families were served."
Gubler noted the need here is significant this year, and all gifts were claimed quickly, leaving approximately 30 families without items.
FBLA members are working to ensure those families receive gifts in the coming days.
"We learned a lot about the needs of our community members," Gubler said. "Students are already discussing how to make this community service event even better next year."
