SPOKANE VALLEY – The Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD) is hosting a fire safety demonstration to show the dangers of dry Christmas trees and teach families how to reduce fire risks during the holidays.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, fire departments nationwide respond to an average of 160 Christmas tree fires annually, which causes $12 million in property damage and results in at least one death for every 32 incidents. The longer a tree remains in the home, the more likely it is to dry out and become a fire hazard.
The SVFD will demonstrate how quickly a dry tree can ignite and destroy a room. The event will be held Thursday, Dec. 19 at 2 p.m. at the SVFD Training Facility, 2411 North Pioneer Lane.
The department also urges families to keep trees watered well, away from heat sources, and to make sure that their lights are in good condition.
