SPOKANE – The Spokane County Sheriff's Office has been recognized for achieving the highest professional standards in law enforcement. Last week the office earned accreditation through the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs (WASPC) during the group's Fall Conference.
The WASPC accreditation process, which spans multiple months, involves a seven-phase review to ensure that agencies meet the association's high standards. These include effective administration, use of technology, officer training, fair recruitment practices, and public safety measures.
"Receiving accreditation from WASPC confirms that the Spokane County Sheriff's Office has achieved the highest professional standards in policing," said Sheriff John Nowels, noting that he is proud of the hard work and professionalism of his team.
"The Spokane County Sheriff's Office took these direct and tangible steps to earn the public's confidence in their operations," said WASPC Executive Director Steven Strachan, praising the office's efforts. "The community should be proud of the men and women who serve them every day."
Originally established in 1976, WASPC's accreditation standards are part of a broader effort to improve law enforcement practices statewide. The program's certification lasts four years, after which the re-accreditation process begins.
