Eagle women winless on Hawaii trip

HONOLULU — The Eastern Washington women escaped the rain but not a pair of losses in their trip to play in the Bank of Hawaii Classic.

Eastern saw a late tally fall short in a 59-57 loss to St. Mary’s, Nov. 22 and then 67-55 to the host Rainbow Wahine, Nov. 24.

Eastern trailed 48-39 after three quarters and the Eagles’ 18-11 edge in the final 15 minutes was not enough.

Peyton Howard had a game-high 14 points, shooting 41.7% from the field against the Gaels of the West Coast Conference. She also contributed six assists, four rebounds and two steals. Jaecy Eggers followed with 13 while Breeje Schuler added 10 points, both career-bests.

A slow start again proved costly in the end for Eastern in their matchup with the Rainbow Wahine where the Eagles trailed 38-26 at halftime.

Howard’s 14 points was the only Eagle in double figures.

Eastern shot 36.2% overall and 35.0% from beyond the arc but struggled to match Hawaii’s dominance inside, with the Rainbow Wahine holding a 36-24 edge in points in the paint.

Eastern, 1-5 in preseason games, was back in Cheney Nov. 27 to play CSU Bakersfield. They are in Brookings Dec. 4 to face South Dakota State in a segment of the Summit League Challenge.
