Medical Lake council talks budget changes during meeting

City reviews parks spending

MEDICAL LAKE – Finance Director Koss Ronhault updated the city council on the third-quarter budget during the Nov. 19 meeting, stressing the city’s need for year-end amendments to the 2024 budget. He explained that while 83% of the city’s funds were reported as spent, the current number would be closer to 85%.

General Fund revenues reached 89 of the $2.5 million budget, exceeding expectations by $135,000 due to higher-thang-anticipated sales taxes, permits, and interest income. Expenses stood at 67% used, however, key departments like court services (98%) and administration (94%) were nearing their original limits.

Ronhault outlined proposed amendments to cover unplanned costs. Notable increases include $116,000 for wastewater treatment equipment, $22,000 for street repairs, and $12,000 for parks staffing and maintenance. He noted that while Wastewater Treatment had exceeded its budget, added revenue from the General Fund would offset the costs.

Parks and Public Safety expenses reached 96% usage as a result of higher staff demands and contract costs than were initially anticipated. The Water Fund also saw unanticipated operational costs tied to intertie usage and audit adjustments.

Mayor Terri Cooper highlighted the importance of keeping the budget balanced, and making sure each fund remains prepared for future needs.

“It’s about making sure we have sufficient reserves going into 2025,” she said.
