Cheney XC compete in Boise

BOISE — Cheney cross country athletes, running under their off-season colors and team as the 509ers, competed Nov. 16 in Boise, Idaho at the NXR Northwest Regionals.

Cameron Frenk (92nd) at 16 minutes, 8.40 seconds and Sam Hilton (94/16:09) were top finishers behind winner Tayvon Kitchen (14:53.30) in the Men’s 5,000 Meters Championship race.

Hannah Ward (91/19:16.80) was the leading 509er in the Women’s 5,000 Meters Championship where Chloe Huyler topped the category in 17 minutes even.

The 509er boys landed in 17th place out of 22 teams coach Derek Slaughter reported via email.

“It was not the ending we were hoping for, but we learned a lot being the “Arena” of Championship style racing for the first time as a team,” Slaughter said. “It was a way different race than we planned for and we will come back next year more prepared to run with the best in the West.”

Liam Franzitch won an earlier race in the day in Rising Stars No. 2 and was the only PR on the day in Boise.

With Ward running in a separate division, it “skewed results” for the 509er girls Slaughter indicated.

“They were competitive in the open division among rivals in the area and really enjoyed the trip down to Boise,” Slaughter said.

The athletes are now ready for some time off and then going to put in the work to be competitive during the 2025 track season, Slaughter said.

The event was a massive collection of nearly 3,700 high school athletes plus another 370 grade and middle school participants.
