Fire at Flour Mill contained by local firefighters

Fire extinguishes within 4 hours

CHENEY – Fire broke out on the truck loading bin or hopper at the Archer Daniel's Midland Flour Mill on 1st Street on Nov. 13.

The city fire department and Spokane County Fire District 3 responded swiftly to the scene as city police closed 1st Street, diverting traffic onto 2nd Street to ensure safety and facilitate emergency operations.

Firefighters managed to contain the fire within an hour, limiting it to a single hopper in the facility. Crews then focused on fully extinguishing the flames, preventing the fire from spreading to other parts of the building, according to Spokane County fire officials.

The flour mill, a historic landmark in Cheney, was the first of its kind in the city and was once owned by former Cheney Mayor and Washington State Governor Clarence Daniel Martin.

By 9:00 p.m., the fire was fully extinguished, and firefighters cleared the scene. No injuries were reported, but the damaged equipment will require repairs before operations can resume.
