Small school volleyball hits Cheney
CHENEY – Local volleyball fans were treated to small-school excitement on Nov. 7, with state berths on the line.
Playing the finals rounds of the District 6 Northeast 2B tournament in Cheney High School, Freeman topped Liberty (Spangle) in the championship to earn state berths.
And in the consolation round, Colfax bounced back to spike Davenport for the final two state berths.
State volleyball got underway Wednesday morning in the Yakima SunDome.
The No. 3-ranked Freeman Scotties opened state play at 9:45 a.m. against No. 14 Goldendale.
On an adjacent court, the No. 11 Davenport Gorillas faced off against No. 6 Rainier at the same time.
The No. 8-ranked Liberty Lancer girls were slated to take the court at 11:45 a.m. against No. 9 Tri-Cities Prep from Pasco.
Freeman qualified for state by sweeping the competition in Cheney, downing Newport, Lind-Ritzville and Liberty in 9 straight sets without a loss.
Liberty qualified by beating both Reardan and Davenport by 3-1 margins.
Colfax qualified the hard way, beating St. George's, 3-0, then losing to Davenport, 3-2. In the consolation bracket, the Bulldogs eliminated Reardan, 3-1, then eliminated defending 2B state runner-up, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague, 3-2. And in a rematch for the third spot to state, the Bulldogs topped Davenport, 3-1.
Davenport opened with a 3-1 win over Colfax, then lost the semifinal to Liberty, 3-1. In the consolation, the Gorillas spiked Northwest Christian, 3-1, before losing to Colfax.
