Veterans honored for service in Washington

Local leaders honored for supporting veterans

OLYMPIA – The Governor’s Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee (VAAC) has recognized exemplary service to veterans and their families through the 2024 Outstanding Service to Veterans Awards. These awards honor individuals and organizations that have demonstrated outstanding commitment and support to veterans across Washington State. The recipients will be formally celebrated at the Auburn Veterans Day Parade luncheon for their contributions.

These awards fall into three categories, each focusing on different aspects of service:

• Superior Service Award: The highest honor, reserved for those with extraordinary achievements in veteran advocacy.

• Distinguished Service Award: Given for impactful and consistent contributions.

• Team Award: Recognizes teams who have made a meaningful difference collectively.

David Puente, Director of the Washington State Department of Veterans Affaors (WDVA), congratulated the recipients, saying, “This award symbolizes your dedication and the positive change you’ve created for veterans.”

This year’s awardees include:

• Superior Service Award: Dixie Ferguson, a community advocate from Walla Walla County.

• Distinguished Service Award: Christeen Olson from Spokane County, for her commitment to veterans’ welfare.

• Team Award: Boy Scouts Troop 400 of Spokane Valley, recognized for their group efforts.

Senator Steve Conway and Representative J.T. Wilcox received the Legislator of the Year Awards for their ongoing legislative work supporting veterans.
