Cheney Parks and Recreation Department was one of 15 organizations in King, Pierce and Spokane counties recently honored by the Raikes Foundation for providing “high quality out of school time programs by young people as part of its Youth Program Quality Initiative.”
Westwood Middle School students, staff and guests honored almost 100 men and women of U.S. armed forces veterans for their service at the school’s annual Veterans Day program on Nov. 10.
Medical Lake cross country team won 1A state championship last Saturday on the 5,000-meter Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco where they improved on their 2013 performance by scoring 53-80 win over Kings in the team standings. This was their back to back championship.

A project to rehabilitate Cheney water wells, one, two and six, costing an estimated $115,000, was one of the key projects approved by the city council.
The Cheney Community Church, located between Second and Third streets was about to dedicate its new sanctuary and fellowship hall.
The Eastern Washington University volleyball team was preparing to hos the Big Sky Conference tournament at Reese Court with hopes of making their first trip to the NCAA Tournament.

The Washington State Court of Appeals sided with the city of Cheney in denying a permit to construct a high-rise apartment and commercial building on State Route 904 at the side of the Elegant Egg Restaurant.
Cheney taxpayers received a nearly $600,000 increase in their property tax bills when the local school district received levy assistance money from the state of Washington.
The Cheney High School Blackhawks ended their season with a 34-7 loss to West Valley-Yakima in the first round of the 2A playoffs and finished 6-3 on the year. Levi Luhn scored Cheney’s touchdown.

Eastern received a $40,000 grant to survey and appraise ten truckloads of documents from the city of Spokane that were discovered when offices moved to the new city hall in 1981.
The Cheney Fire Department’s brand new defibrillator made it debut in the hands of the firefighter Gary Hartford. His actions – and the machine – helped save the life of a Cheney resident who had an apparent heart attack.
Cheney High School’s wrestling team, led by return of ten letter-men, was preparing to begin its season. The team was coached by Sam Indorf and included: Tim Mason, Darrin Mason, Chad Triplett, Phil Vigil, Kurt Triplett, Wayne Harrington, John Beauvais, Joe Van Troba and Scott Miller.

With talk about double-shifting at the high school, the Cheney School District was hoping for passage of a $3.5 million bond issue at the Nov. 26 election.
There were 53 starters in the recent Cheney Marathon, the largest field in the three-year history of the event.

Cooks in the Cheney School District were preparing to cook 25 turkeys that would be used to serve students at a special lunch.
A total of 37 former Cheney High School graduates were enrolled at four-year colleges, including one at the U.S. Naval Academy.
Cheney High School’s head basketball coach Don Monson announced he had cut his varsity team to 11 players including letter-men Randy Liddell, Steve Swegel, Bob Bartlett, Gary Rietz and Dick Yocum.
