Eastern crushes Whitworth

CHENEY — The Eastern Washington men’s basketball team opened the Dan Monson era with an 83-52 exhibition win over Whitworth University, Oct. 26 at Reese Court. 

No additional details were available.

The Eagles will begin their pre-season schedule Nov. 4 at Colorado and have their home opener Nov. 6 vs. Seattle University.

Eagles surge past Mounties

CHENEY —Eastern Washington started slow but finished strong and defeated Eastern Oregon 81-61 Oct. 27 in women’s basketball at Reese Court. 

The Mounties had a 18-11 lead after the opening 10 minutes before the Eagles began to find their shooting. EWU would outscore the Mounties, 26 to 11 in the quarter and lead 37-29 at the half.

Eastern gained separation in the fourth quarter outscoring 20 to 9.

Peyton Howard led the Eagles with 14 points and was one of four Eastern players scoring in double figures. Jaecy Eggers scored 13 points and led the team with 12 rebounds.

Eastern begins its 2024-25 regular season Nov. 4, at Washington State, with tipoff at 4 p.m.

Football

Freeman continues to win

FREEMAN — The Scotties football team notched another Northeast 2B league win Friday night, Oct. 25, dominating the Jenkins (Chewelah) Cougars.

The Scotties won, 50-0, to improveto 7-1 on the season. They are currently ranked No. 5 in the state 2B Associated Press poll,

Freeman will head to Jimmy Snider Field in Ritzville on Friday to faceoff against the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos (3-5). Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Liberty improves to 5-3

SPANGLE — The Liberty Lancers boys football team improved to 5-3 on the season Friday, Oct. 25, after crusing past the Kettle Falls Bulldogs, 33-0.

The Lancers are at home again Friday against Northeast 2B rival Colfax. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Soccer

Scotties remain undefeated

FREEMAN — The Scotties girls soccer team remains undefeated after blowing out Kettle Falls, 14-2 on Thursday, Oct. 24.

The win came only two days after an 11-0 rout of the Upper Columbia Academy Lions of Spangle.

This week, the Scotties travel to Davenport to play the Gorillas at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31.

Eastern closes with win

GREELEY, Colo. — Eastern Washington soccer (9-5-4, 4-1-3) finished the season off with a three match winning streak following a 2-1 victory over Northern Colorado (3-14-1, 1-5-1).

Gillian Martin’s goal in the 34th minute to tie the game 1-1 while Kendall Moore scored the game wining goal in the 54th minute.

The Eagles will head to Missoula for the Big Sky Championships and play Wednesday, Nov. 6. The time and opponent are still to be finalized after matches around the conference.

Cheney reaches playoffs

SPOKANE — Winning three of their final four games locked the Blackhawks into the Greater Spokane League 3A soccer playoffs, head Coach Nels Radke said.

“We finished fourth in the league which was an improvement from last year and I think our league is one of the strongest in the state,” Radke noted.

Cheney (3-6 GSL, 6-9 overall) will travel to face 3A top seed Mount Spokane (7-2, 11-2) on Oct. 29 in the first of a double-elimination round of play.

A win over the Wildcats advances Cheney to a contest between the winner either University or Kennewick. A loss means they face the loser between those two teams.

Kinley Collins is currently Cheney’s leading scorer with 12 goals and three assists while Kayelee Kohlman is tops in assists with seven, plus two goals.

Keeper Kiah Klauss has 81 saves and three shutouts this season.

Eagles defeat Lumberjacks

CHENEY, Wash. — Eastern Washington rebounded from a first set loss to win three in a row (18-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-20) and defeat Northern Arizona in a Big Sky Conference match, Oct. 26 at Reese Court giving the Eagles a home court split last week.

Bri Gunderson recorded 21 kills along with ten blocks to lead the Eagles who improved to 6-3 in conference play, 10-9 overall.

On Oct. 25, Eastern was swept by Northern Colorado, 3-0, (25-23, 27-25, 26-24).

Kalista Lukovich led Eastern with 15 kills and hitting .333. On the defensive end, Tanai Jenkins had five blocks and Quincy Moran four.

The Eagles hit the road to take on Portland State on Thursday, Oct. 31 and then Sacramento State on Saturday, Nov. 2.
