Eastern, Whitworth meet in exhibition

CHENEY — Hoops season is officially here. The 2024-25 EWU Men’s Basketball schedule tips off with an exhibition game at Reese Court against Whitworth on Saturday, October 26, at 4 p.m., offering fans a first glimpse of the revamped roster.

Eastern’s women will entertain Eastern Oregon in an exhibition game the following afternoon, Oct. 27 at 2 p.m.

Under the guidance of new head coach Dan Monson, there’s a strong focus on continuing the momentum from last season that included a 15-3 record, a Big Sky regular season title and 21-11 overall record.

Returning to the court are six key players from last season’s championship squad, including guards Mason Williams and Nic McClain, who will look to lead the team once again. They’ll be joined by Vice Zanki, Sebastian Hartmann, Jackson Seale and Emmett Marquardt, all of whom bring valuable experience and skill to the roster.

Monson has also brought in a talented group of transfers to bolster the team’s depth.

Notable additions include Angelo Winkle and Elijah Thomas from Des Moines Area Community College, Tyler Powell from Nevada, and Maddox Monson and Shaumba Ngoyi from Long Beach State. The Eagles also welcome Sam Stockton from LC State, Pavlo Dziuba from North Carolina High Point, and Andrew Cook from Carroll College, each expected to make an immediate impact.

Cross Country

Men first, women third at LC State Invite

LEWISTON — The Eastern Washington cross country teams had a strong showing at the LC State Invitational, with the men finishing first with 38 points and the women finished third with 69 points.

The men were led by Evan Peters, finishing fourth with a time of 24 minutes, 18 seconds, followed by Marcus Lemon and Noah Hasselblad in sixth and seventh. Other scorers for the Eagles included Austin Steed in tenth and Owen Higgins in 11.

The women were led by Cassidy Walchak-Sloan, finishing seventh with a time of 17:21.00, while Jasmin Muneton was close behind in 12th with a time of 17:33.00. Other scorers for the Eagles include Nattie Ruzauskas in 14th, Lilly Carlascio in 16th, and Jenni Bissell in 20th.

Eastern will head to Pocatello, Idaho for the Big Sky Championship meet on Friday. Nov. 1.

Hockey

Huskies sweep Eagles in PAC-8 play

SEATTLE — The Eastern Washington University Eagles faced PAC-8 rival, the University of Washington Huskies, in a two-game series at the Kraken Community Iceplex Oct. 18 and 19.

The Eagles took a 4-1 lead into the third period only to lose 7-6 in a shootout, Friday. The Huskies tied the game at 6-6 with just 10 seconds left in regulation.

Eastern got two goals from Dom Didzerekis and Peyton Lund, added a goal and assisted on two others.

In Saturday’s game Washington scored four goals in both the first and second periods on the way to a 10-1 win. Joel Lusk scored Eastern’s lone goal, were outshot 35-29 and went 0-for-12 on the power play.

The Eagles are 2-4 in PAC-8 play, 3-5 overall ad will head to Butte, Montana to take on the Montana Tech Orediggers October 25 and 26. Eastern returns home Nov. 1 against the San Jose State Spartans in another PAC-8 game at the University Rec Center rink.

Soccer

Eastern wraps conference play at UNC

CHENEY — Eastern Washington will take a strong finish in which they have three wins and as many ties in their last seven games, and will head to Greeley, Colorado for their season finale against Northern Colorado (3-13-1, 1-4-1) Oct. 24.

The Eagles have back-to-back wins, 2-0, Oct.17 at Idaho State and 2-1 vs. Weber State at home, Oct. 20.

Eastern (8-5-4, 3-1-3) gave their seniors something to smile about in their victory over Weber State.

After an early Wildcats goal, the Eagles came back thanks to goals from senior Charity Freeman, and conference goal leader Chloe Pattison.

Eastern honored seven seniors on senior day. Lyric Baker, Grace Terrill, Katrina Kupp, Gillian Martin, Isabelle Herting, Charity Freeman, and Elisabeth Cole. The group has combined to play in 324 games with 189 starts during the past seasons.

At Pocatello, Chloe Pattison recorded her 10th goal of the season and became the third Eagle ever to record 10 goals in a single season. Pattison leads the Big Sky with 10 goals on the season, and currently ranks seventh in the country in goals scored.

Bella Bunnage would open scoring in the 41st minute for Eastern.

Keeper Kamryn Willoughby earned the shutout and moved to fifth all-time in Eagle career shutouts (8).

Volleyball

Collins repeats as Defensive Player of the Week

CHENEY — For the second consecutive week, senior libero Makenna Collins has been honored as the Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week. This marks her second player of the week honors in her career. Her impressive performances were key to the Eagles’ recent success.

Over the weekend, Collins recorded a total of 29 digs, averaging an impressive 4.14 digs per set, along with 12 assists. In the match against Idaho State, she contributed 11 digs and five assists, while against Weber, she excelled with 18 digs and seven assists.

Eagles extend win streak to five

CHENEY — Eastern (9-8, 5-2) extended its five-game win streak with a hard-fought victory over Weber State (7-11, 4-3), triumphing in four sets, on Homecoming Saturday at Reese Court.

After Weber won the opening set 26-24, Eastern reeled off victories of 25-23, 25-16 and 25-22 and won its fifth consecutive contest.

Bri Gunderson was the standout performer, leading the offense with 13 kills and a hitting percentage of .478. Alyssa Radke also made significant contributions, adding ten kills, while defensively, Makenna Collins had 18 digs and Gunderson recorded nine blocks.

Earlier in the week the Eagles swept Idaho State with wins of 25-22, 25-23 and 25-21 also at Reese Court.

Radke led the Eagles offensively with 10 kills, while Gunderson anchored the defense with five blocks. Kate Hatch and Jannie Blake combined for 37 assists, with Blake also adding four aces.
