CHENEY — The UC Davis Aggies were bottled up most of entire first quarter of their Oct. 19 at Roos Field, running just 14 plays and gaining 48 yards in four possessions.
But everything changed in the second quarter. Within 33 seconds it took for Lan Larison to race 53 yards for the Aggies first touchdown it changed the day.
UCD would outscore Eastern 28-6 to build a lead they never lost in a 48-38 Big Sky Conference win in front of a EWU Homecoming crowd of 7,419.
While Larison scored just once, the one-time rodeo steer wrestler from Caldwell, Idaho, rolled up 182 net yards on 29 carries — a stout 6.3 per touch.
“Their game plan on offense was to use (number) three,” EWU head coach Aaron Best said in a post-game radio interview. “Our game plan of defense was just stop, or at least contain three and we didn’t get that done today.”
What followed in quick succession for UCD, who won for the first time ever in the series between the schools’ 10 games.
Following an Eastern punt, CJ Hutton scored from 40 on a run and after Efton Chism III drew the Eagles within 14-9, scores from Chaz Davis and Samuel Gbatu, Jr. made it easier to head to the parking lot and second half tailgating.
Eastern mounted a rally that trimmed the deficit to 31-24 on a Jackson Cleaver field goal. But Davis answered with second TDs from Chaz Davis and a dagger in the form of Gbatu’s 90-yard catch and run for a 45-24 lead with 10:50 to play.
Chism set a career-best with 15 catches, while racking up 170 yards, three shy of his career-best. Kekoa Visperas completed 30-of-42 passes for 321 yards and two touchdowns. Visperas also led the team with 57 rushing yards and two touchdowns, on 14 carries.
