Community event focuses on teen safety

CHENEY – On Oct. 24, Cheney Middle School will host “Hidden in Plain Sight,” an interactive event designed to help parents and caregivers recognize the warning signs of teen substance use, mental health issues, unhealthy relationships, and human trafficking.

The event, announced at the recent West Plains Safety Alliance meeting on Oct. 17, is being organized by Jessica Deutsch of Talk2HealthyChoices.

The event features an interactive experience where attendees will walk through a mock teen bedroom and search for hidden signs of risky behavior. Afterward, there will be a presentation and discussion about what those signs mean and how to address them.

Adam Johnson of the Airway Heights Police Department is playing a key role in supporting the event, and several community agencies will be on hand to provide resources for participants. These resources are aimed at helping parents and caregivers better understand the pressures and risks that teens face today.

The event will run from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at Cheney Middle School. It is free to attend, but only adults over 21 are permitted due to the sensitive nature of the topics discussed. Childcare will be provided.
