Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, Spokane County Fir District 3 and the Washington State Department of Transportation responded to a power pole fire on State Route 902 and Welcome Road, two miles east of Medical Lake, Oct. 14 at 11:10 p.m.

Cheney Police units were first o the scene of an accident involving four vehicles, two of which were motorcycles, on Interstate 90 early Sunday morning, Oct. 19.

The Cheney girl’s soccer team earned its first winning streak of the season, albeit briefly, with back to back wins last week at home over Pullman and East Valley.

Oct. 28, 2004

Eastern Washington University will play a key role in the Nov. 2 national election serving as the Associated Press’ Western Election Center, collecting voting returns from 22 states.

An 18-year-old Cheney resident, Carson Kaemming, was killed in an early morning accident on First Street near the K-Street transit station when the victim’s car hit and sheared off a power pole.

The No. 25-ranked Eastern Eagles, 4-1 in Big Sky Conference play and 5-3 overall, were preparing to face Sacramento State in the annual Homecoming game at Woodward Field.

Oct. 27, 1994

Paul Schmidt, Cheney’s director of public works, and a number of local dignitaries helped officially open the city’s new $20 million wastewater treatment plant.

Study results released by the Cheney School District revealed 98 percent of the district’s high school students indicated it was “fairly easy,” and “very easy” for them to obtain alcohol.

Medical Lake’s girls cross country team finished their Northeast A League season with a perfect 7-0 record by edging Riverside, 28-29 as Amie Poteet, Heidi Abel and Jamie Smith finished 1-2-4.

Oct. 25, 1984

A candidate’s debate for the Fifth District Congressional race staged at Cheney City Hall featured just challenger Jack Hebner as incumbent Tom Foley had a conflicting event.

Eastern’s president H. George Frederickson, PhD announced the school would limit enrollment to 7,220 full-time equivalent students.

Eastern’s football team recently earned a national ranking in a Lexington Herald-Leader NCAA 1-AA poll. The Eagles were putting their 6-1-1 record on the line in a trip to play defending Big Sky Conference champion, 4-4 Nevada-Reno.

Oct. 31, 1974

Despite there being a reduction in estimated revenues of about 5 percent, administrative assistant Charlie Earl and Mayor Jerry Blakely told citizens that city services for 1975 should remain the same as the current year.

On person was killed in a traffic accident on Salnave Road. Robert Shaffer, 35, from Cheney failed to negotiate a curve, drove off the road and was partially ejected and crushed as the vehicle rolled.

Jim Fisk had 111 yards rushing and Eastern Washington State College’s only touchdown, while Barry Sartz kicked a 38-yard field goal in a 10-9 upset win over Eastern Oregon in an Evergreen Conference football game played in LeGrande, Ore.

Oct. 30, 1964

The huge petrified tree that was recently unearthed near Latah Creek and estimated to be 21 million years old and weight almost 12,000 pounds, was going to have a permanent home on Eastern’s campus in front of the science building.
