Firefighters airlift injured mountain biker

LIBERTY LAKE – Spokane Valley firefighters and emergency responders executed a successful rescue of an injured mountain biker on the challenging trails above Liberty Lake on Saturday, October 12. The Spokane Valley Fire Department was dispatched around 12:30 pm in response to reports of a biker who had fallen and sustained injuries.

When they arrived, firefighters discovered that the biker had sustained injuries due to a fall. Given the challenging terrain, crews initially attempted to reach the biker by ground with the aid of a Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) to navigate the difficult trails. They alerted the air emergency unit about the potential need of a helicopter for the rescue.

With assistance from a nearby bystander, firefighters were able to locate the injured biker. After assessing the situation, the crew decided that carrying the patient down the mountain was not possible. They transported the biker to an open area, where they could safely perform a helicopter evacuation.

The patient was hoisted by helicopter and flown to a designated landing zone at Ridgeline High School. Firefighters later reported that the injured biker was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Spokane Valley Fire Department expressed gratitude to everyone who assisted during the rescue, including the bystander and additional emergency responders.
