Suspect found with pawned handgun
SPOKANE – Detectives recovered a Sig Sauer handgun, ammunition, and a loaded magazine on October 8 during their investigation of Ian I. Tanner, 43 for burglary. Tanner, a multi-time convicted felon, was additionally charged with unlawful possession of a firearm after authorities discovered he had pawned the handgun, which he is prohibited from owning due to his felony status.
Spokane County Deputies arrested Tanner for a residential burglary in Spokane Valley after a brief foot pursuit on Oct. 1.
The incident occurred in late September, when deputies responded to a burglary report at an apartment near East Buckley Avenue and North Custer Road. The victim, who was out of town at the time of the burglary, reported seeing someone on security video entering her apartment without her permission. She reported this to a family member, who then contacted the police.
Investigators identified Tanner as the suspect after reviewing the security footage. On Oct. 1, they learned Tanner would be driving his green Jeep to a location in the 5200 block of East Sprague Avenue and set up a watch in the area.
Around 2:15 pm, detectives blocked his vehicle when he arrived to prevent a potential escape. Although he initially complied with orders to exit the vehicle, he suddenly fled on foot, narrowly avoiding a passing car. Officers quickly caught and arrested him without further incident.
Tanner was originally charged with residential burglary, with his bond set at $10,000. Following the firearm discovery and unlawful possession charge, his bond increased to $25,000. Prior to his arrest, Tanner had been released on bond for unrelated charges of identity theft and possession of stolen property.
