Hall of Fame breakfast scheduled for Oct. 19

CHENEY — Eastern Washington University will honor six former student-athletes on Oct. 19 as the 20th class of inductees into the Eastern Athletics Hall of Fame taking place in conjunction with EWU’s football game versus UC Davis at Roos Field.

Breakfast will begin at 8 a.m. in the Pence Union Building with the induction ceremony at 8:45 a.m.

The inductees of the 20th class of the EWU Athletics Hall of Fame include:

Rodney Stuckey, a two-time honorable mention NCAA Division I All-America selection for the Eagle men’s basketball team (2004-07), will be among those inducted. After setting a myriad of Eastern scoring records, he went on to a 10-year career in the National Basketball Association for Detroit and Indianapolis.

Joining him will be two-time All-America football linebacker Derek Strey (1993-97), high-scoring All-Big Sky basketball player David Peed (1987-90), multi-sport All-Big Sky performer Stephanie Ulmer (2001-06), All-Mountain West basketball performer Cristy Cochran (1982-86) and track and field All-America javelin thrower Carolee Geaudreau-Gutierrez (2003-07).

Football

Rams race past Cardinals

RIVERSIDE – Medical Lake football fell to 0-2 in Northeast A League play and 1-5 overall following a 40-0 loss at Riverside, Oct. 11.

No other details were provided from the game.

The Cardinals entertain Cascade of Leavenworth at 7 p.m. in a non-league game, Oct. 18 for Homecoming.

Eastern faces ISU, Weber

CHENEY —Eastern Washington will split time on the road and home this week for a pair of Big Sky Conference contests.

Following last week’s 1-0 loss at Northern Arizona and 1-1 tie at Montana, Eastern travels to Idaho State, Oct. 17 and is home vs. Weber State Oct. 20 at 1 p.m.

Haylee Phoenix scored the game’s only goal in the 13th minute for the Lumberjacks in Flagstaff, Oct. 10.

Charity Freeman scored to give Eastern (6-5-3, 1-1-2) a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute but Montana tied it in the 70th minute.

Collins leads Cheney to win

CHENEY — Kinley Collins scored twice and added a pair of assists as Cheney defeated the short-staffed Shadle Highlanders, 4-0, Oct. 9.

Collins opened scoring with back-to-back goals in the seventh and 25th minute helping Cheney build a 3-0 first hall lead following Molly Hill’s score in the 37th minute.

Ally Deutsch’s goal in the 60th minute capped scoring in a game that ended with 15 minutes remaining the Highlanders stopped play due to lack of players.

Kia Klauss earned the shutout making four saves as Cheney won its first Greater Spokane League game and is 1-5 and 4-8 overall.

Cheney hosted Central Valley on Oct. 16.

Volleyball

Eagles sweep in Montana

CHENEY — Eastern Washington returned from their annual trip to Montana with a pair of victories, 3-2 at Montana State on Oct. 10 before sweeping Montana 3-0 two days later.

It took five sets in Bozeman for Eastern to win 25-27, 25-23, 25-22, 18-25 and 15-13.

Bri Gunderson delivered a stellar performance with 12 blocks, 20 kills and hitting .531. Alyssa Radke, Sadie Bacon, Kalista Lukovich and Quincy Moran each contributed double-digit kills, while Lukovich and Jannie Blake achieved double-doubles.

Lukovich recorded 13 kills and 15 digs for her seventh double-double of the season and was supported by Gunderson who dominated defensively with six blocks.

The Eagles will return home to face off against Idaho State on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 4 p.m. and against Weber State on Saturday, Oct.19 at 11 a.m., for the homecoming and alumni match.

Medical Lake opens NEA league play with a victory

MEDICAL LAKE – Cardinals volleyball

collected a pair of wins last week in three contests, including the Cards’ first in Northeast A League play.

The Cardinals earned a 3-2 win at Colville when after leading 2-0 had to hang on for a fifth-set win. ML opened with 25-19 and 25-11 wins but lost the next two 22-25, 17-25 before winning the finale 15-13.

Trinity Auckerman had 50 digs, while Madi Spring added 21 assists.

Earlier in the week the Cardinals split a pair of non-league contests with Greater Spokane League schools, topping Rogers 3-0 at home, Oct. 7, before losing at Cheney 3-0, Oct. 9.

In the Rogers win (25-9, 25-19, 25-17) Auckerman had 32 digs and Spring 16 assists.

Cheney’s win came on scores of 25-14, 25-12 and 25-22 as Aukerman led the Cardinals with 40 digs and Spring added 14 assists.

Medical Lake entertained Lakeside, Oct. 15 and on Oct. 17 traveled to Riverside for a 6:30 p.m. match

Slow Pitch

Blackhawks top Bullpups

SPOKANE — Cheney slow pitch ended its season Oct. 10 with a 16-11 win at Gonzaga Prep.

Scoring six runs in the first inning and another nine in the fifth, the Blackhawks (2-11 GSL, 2-13 overall) had 17 hits took advantage of six Bullpen errors to earn their second Greater Spokane League win.

Rheylyn Khcirka, Allie Halverson, Millie Beito, Carissa Bludah, Makiah Ryan, Kierra Montemayor and JV call up Teleah Findling each had a pair of hits for the Blackhawks. Khcirka and Ryan each had a double.
