Cardinals sweep opener

ML boys edge Colville, 27-28, in league meet

MEDICAL LAKE - In its race to return teams to the state 1A cross country championships four weeks from now in Pasco, Medical Lake put its best feet forward, Oct. 9 at Colville.

Behind its usual cast of contenders, the Cardinal boys edged the hosts 27-28 on the boy's side but had less drama in the girls 22-33 win.

A final kick from the Cards No. 5 runner, Aiden Murillo, allowed him to score the deciding points.

Murillo who clocked an 18 minute, 38 second finish, was just ahead of Colville's Liam Webster (18:40) in a sprint to the line.

Colville's Malik Ortiz won the individual win in 16:18 with the Cardinals' Nakai Ornelas at 17:00. Garrett Montney (4th/17:43)

Hector Gomez (6th/17:55) and Loghan Bradley (7th/18:22) were other Top 10 finishers.

George Pitts finished 11th (18:53) and Mercury Berquist, with a season's personal record of 18:54, finished 12th

Despite running without Mya Gardner and Makalia McKenny, two of Medical Lake's top racers, the Cardinals saw five of its seven finish in the first 10.

Kaylee Dennler at 19:31 was the individual champ, finishing nearly a minute ahead of Colville's Zadi Zier (20:23).

Hannah Luzier (3rd/22:07) and Autumn Trout (22:42) made it three of the first four with Katelyn Hoffer (6th/24:36 and Feodora Lalicker (8th/26:04) completing the top 10.

The four-team Northeast A League concluded the regular season at Medical Lake on Oct. 16 where the four teams met. It featured the long-awaited showdown between Medical Lake and Lakeside.

Berths to state in Pasco on Nov. 9 will be decided in a district meet, Oct. at Lakeside and Nov. 2 districts at Apple Ridge Cross Country Course near Yakima.
