In an effort to promote new development in Cheney’s vacant Commerce and Industrial Park, the City Council unanimously approved a resolution changing the structure of utility connection charges for businesses who might be interested in locating to the park inside the city’s southwest limits.

At its Oct. 7 meeting, Medical Lake City Council approved a joint inter-local agreement with Spokane County and the city of Spokane for solid waste services.

Buoyed by one of the largest first-year classes in school history with 13,453, Eastern Washington University’s fall enrollment has set a record for the sixth consecutive year.

Oct. 21, 2004

For the second time in two weeks, vandalism hit the city of Medical Lake as someone set fire to the skate park scorching a ramp in Pioneer Park.

Three years after five Cheney resident were killed in a head-on collision on State Route 904, a safety project had cut serious accidents by nearly 60 percent.

Data released by Eastern Washington University showed what many already believed – the school had a significant economic impact on Cheney pumping an estimated $31 million into the community.

Cheney High School football player Brett Igbinoba was named as the Seattle Times 3A Player of the Week following his 208 rushing yards and a touchdown in the Blackhawks’ 33-19 win over Rogers High School.

Oct. 20, 1994

Cheney’s new $18 million waste treatment plant was set to have a formal dedication, ending six years of work to get the city into compliance with state and federal water qualify guidelines.

The Cheney School District reported enrollment numbers were about 60 students short of projections meaning state funding would also fall about $225,000 below expectations.

The Cheney Blackhawks and West Valley Eagles, both 3-0, were to meet to break the tie atop the Frontier League football standings.

Oct. 18, 1984

The Cheney Chamber of Commerce and Eastern Washington University signed an agreement to become partners in promoting each other with the school contributing $5,000 to fund a part time employee to manage the organization.

The spokane County Sheriff’s Office was seeking help in identifying the nude body of a deceased female found one mile west of Cheney-Tyler exit on Interstate 90.

Cheney rolled over Deer Park 35-6 in a Frontier League football game to improve to 3-1 in league play and 5-1 overall. Mike Spring’s 65-yard touchdown run was a highlight in the victory.

50 years ago

Oct. 24, 1974

Official fall enrollment at Eastern Washington State College was 6,390 students. The average student would spend $90 a year on textbooks according to school officials.

Damage was estimated at $40,000 following a stubborn grain elevator fire in Medical lake that destroyed 20 tons of oats.

Cheney and Medical Lake were primed to meet in their annual football game in Cheney with bragging rights and an outside shot at the Frontier League championship at stake.

60 years ago

Oct. 23, 1964

Homecoming at Eastern Washington State College was to honor the classes of 1914, 1939 and 1954 with a parade and other activities centered around the football game at Woodward Fields versus Pacific Lutheran University.

The Tillicum Club in Cheney voted to endorse Referendum 12, a measure, if passed, that would make $59 million available in state matching funds for stat school construction.
