Felony DUI arrest leads to seizure

Firearms, drugs, and cash found

SPOKANE VALLEY – A Spokane Valley man arrested for felony DUI is now facing additional charges after deputies recovered guns, drugs, and cash from his vehicle.

On Sept 6, around 3:30 pm, Spokane Valley Deputies responded to reports of a driver passed out in a parking lot near the 9400 block of East Sprague Avenue. When deputies arrived, they noticed drug paraphernalia, including burnt tin foil and small blue pills believed to be fentanyl, inside the vehicle. The driver, later identified as 41-year-old Jason D. Nelson, had a large amount of cash visible in the car.

Deputies positioned their patrol cars to prevent an escape. When they woke Nelson, he tried to drive away, but his car was in park. Nelson admitted to using fentanyl earlier and agreed to field sobriety tests. He also told deputies he was a convicted felon and knew there were guns and fentanyl in the vehicle, although he claimed the firearms were not his.

Nelson has prior convictions for two counts of vehicular assault in 2008. Deputies arrested him for felony DUI and seized his vehicle for further investigation. He was taken to Spokane County Jail, where a Spokane Superior Court Commissioner set his bond at $5,000. Nelson posted bond and was released on September 8.

Later that day, detectives from the Spokane Valley Investigative Unit searched Nelson's vehicle. They recovered six loaded firearms, including one reported stolen, 1.7 ounces of cocaine, 2 ounces of methamphetamine, 1,000 fentanyl pills, 15 bottles of methadone, and $1,000 in cash.

Nelson now faces additional felony charges, including unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of controlled substances with intent to deliver.

The investigation is ongoing.
