Priest River shuts out Medical Lake, 34-0

MEDICAL LAKE – The Priest River Spartans (2-2) dominated the Medical Lake Cardinals (1-3) in a 34-0 shutout on Friday night, Sept. 27.

The Spartans out-gained the Cardinals with 253 total yards - 88 through the air and 165 on the ground- compared to the Cardinals' 142 total yards.

Despite the loss, Cardinal standout Dakota Phillips earned Player of the Game honors for his all-around performance. Phillips, playing on both offense and defense, carried the ball 9 times for 56 yards. On Defense, he recorded 5.5 tackles.

The Cardinals had two turnovers during the game, but managed to recover a fumble forced by offensive lineman Colton McKenney.

Cylas Puzycki led the Cardinals' rushing attack with 20 carries for 83 yards, averaging 4.2 yards per carry.

Spartans' quarterback Lucas Mathews Jr. threw for 81 yards and two touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Cardinals' quarterback Cruz Gomez struggled in the passing game, finishing without a completion but contributing 12 yards on the ground.

One of the game's key moments came from Spartans' freshman Layton Goins, who electrified the crowd with an 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

The Cardinals had opportunities to score, including a missed field goal from the 15-yard line just before halftime. But they couldn't put points on the board.

This Friday, Oct. 4, the Cardinals travel to Colville to take on Northeast 1A rival Crimson Hawks (2-2).

Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
