Freeman rallies past NW Christian

FREEMAN — Rylee Russell’s third goal of the game proved to be the winner and helped rally Freeman to a 4-3 soccer victory over Northwest Christian, Sept. 24 at Freeman.

In the showdown between unbeaten Northeast 2B league leaders, both entering the game at 4-0, NWC got goals from Claire Eichmann in the seventh minute and Julianna Pope at 13 minutes. 

Russell’s first goal at 14 minutes cut the gap, but Freeman went to the break trailing 3-1 following Claire Wichman’s goal in the 37th minute.

Russell started the Freeman rally scoring unassisted in the 49th minute and then set up Nora Gass at 71 minutes for a 3-3 game. Gass returned the favor assisting on Russell’s game winner in the 79th minute.

Freeman had 17 shots and NWC 14. Kelsey Hollen of Freeman had 11 saves while NWC’s Abigail Strandy stopped 14.

The teams have a rematch Oct. 17 in Colbert.
