Cross Country

Eastern competes with split squads

COLUMBIA, Mo. —After a week off, the Eagles men’s and women’s cross-country teams are back in action this week. Eastern will split its time at the Gans Creek Invite on Friday, Sept. 27 in Columbia, Mo., and at the Whitman Invite on Saturday, Sept. 28 in Walla Walla.

Two weeks ago, the Eastern cross country teams each notched fifth place finishes at the Cougar Classic. For the first time in his career, Noah Hasselblad was named the Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week by the Big Sky Conference last week.

Hasselblad’s performance at the Cougar Classic saw him finish ninth with an 8k time of 24 minutes, 9.8 seconds. He was the top Big Sky athlete to cross the finish line in a competitive field of 14 teams.

Golf

Eagles finish 1st tourney of season

WORLEY, Idaho — For the first time in nearly five months, Eastern Washington women’s golf was back on the course hosting the Eagle Invitational, Sept. 22-23 at Circling Raven Golf Course in Worley, Idaho.

EWU closed the tournament in 10th place with a score of 607, going +19 in round one and +12 in round two. CSU Northridge won the Eagle invite with a 575 team score.

Sophomore Gabriella Ilardi led the Eagles with a +4 to earn a tie for 22nd on the individual leaderboard Illardi shot a 74 in both rounds of the tournament.

Junior Brooke Mahler landed in a tie for 29th with a +6, improving her score from 76 in the first round to a 74 in the second round.

Eastern finished ahead of Big Sky opponents Portland State (620) and Idaho State (642) on the team leaderboard.

Eagles open Big Sky play at home

CHENEY — Continuing an extended home stand, Eastern Washington opens Big Sky Conference play hosting Portland State (2-5-1) Friday, Sept. 27, at 3:30 pm, and Sacramento State (2-4-3) Sunday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m.

The Eagles (5-4-1) finished non-conference play at home, and a 2-2 split between Mountain West schools. On Thursday, Eastern recorded their third shutout win of the season in a 1-0 victory over UNLV.

On Sunday, Eastern Washington battled, but fell to Boise State team 2-1. Chloe Pattison would sink a penalty kick for her eighth goal of the season.

Against UNLV, Delani Walker scored her third goal of the season, and Kamryn Willoughby would record her third shutout of the season.

Volleyball

Big Sky play starts for Eagles

SPOKANE — Eastern Volleyball (4-5) are coming off a weekend at the Gonzaga Invitational, including a win over in-state-rival Gonzaga Saturday night to close out non-conference play.

Eastern topped Gonzaga, 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 18-25, 25-21) in the second match. The Eagles opened against San Diego State, losing 3-2 (25-23, 19-25, 20-25, 25-21, 12-15).

Bri Gunderson and Quincy Moran earned all-tournament honors at the Gonzaga Invitational. Gunderson recorded 20 kills, 14 blocks, and 20 total points over the weekend, while Moran recorded 22 kills and 23.5 total points

This week, they will open Big Sky conference play on the road Sept. 26 against Idaho State.
