Blackhawks girls win first volleyball game

Cardinals lose, but ready for NEA play

CHENEY — The Blackhawks girls volleyball team collected its first victory of the season and played their first Greater Spokane League match.

The Blackhawks earned a 3-1 win over GSL North Central, Sept. 14 but lost 3-0 to Northeast A Lakeside, Sept. 17 in a pair of non-league matches last week.

Cheney also opened Greater Spokane League play with a 3-0 loss at home to Ferris.

Led by the 17 kills from Leah Pettet, plus eight digs apiece from Annika Palmer and Delia Keller, the Blackhawks jumped to a 2-0 lead for the win at Spokane,25-14, 25-14, 28-30, 25-20.

Claire Watkins delivered nine digs for Cheney in Suncerest as the Blackhawks fell 25-16, 25-18, 25-20 to the Eagles.

Cheney battled in the opening set, losing 26-24, before being swept 25-20, 25-17 in the final two sets.

Claire Watkins had 20 digs for Cheney with Delia Keller adding 10 assists against Ferris.

The Blackhawks opened GSL play hosting Gonzaga Prep on Sept. 24.

Medical Lake

Meanwhile, the Medical Lake Cardinals girls volleyball team had its two-match win streak halted, but it still sports a 3-2 non-league record in the warmup for Northeast A League play.

The Cardinals topped Greater Spokane League 2A North Central 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-13) Sept. 17 behind the 19-assist effort of Madi Spring and 12 digs from Trinity Auckerman.

They followed the next evening rallying for a 3-2 win (25-14, 20-25, 26-28, 25-19, 15-11) at GSL East Valley. In that five-set win, Spring had 41 assists while Zoe Wilson added 14 kills.

Reardan won the final two games at Medical Lake to earn a 3-1 win on Sept. 21 (15-25, 25-23, 9-25 and 21-25) with Spring tops in assisted (8) and aces (6).

The Cardinals continued non-league play hosting a pair of 1B schools, Davenport, (Sept. 24) and Chewelah (Sept. 25).
