SPOKANE - For Cheney cross country "It was a day for the young runners," head coach Derek Slaughter said via email as freshman boys finished second and girls were third.
The Blackhawks Andrew (13:25.80) and Carter Ward (13:32.50) finished second and third to Mead's Stejer Franklin at 13:19.30 as Mead won that team title 15-18.
Cheney's freshmen girls earned 34 points to champ University's 19 and were led by Abigail Scharosch in a time of 16:32.90, good for third place. Kiera Lanier was 10th at 18:05.70.
Sophomore girls finished in a fourth-place tie with University as Bella Adaszewski finished eighth in a time of 16:56.60 and behind Morgan Delaney from Poison, Mont. at 15:04.
"Bella Adaszewski ran a great race to get a top 10 finish," Slaughter said.
The athlete that dropped the most time from 2023 to 2024 was senior Rylan Rajewski who trimmed over 1 minute, 30 seconds in her race.
Caitlin Shaffer won the wheelchair event in a time of 21:20.03.
In other boys events, Sam Hilton was coming off sickness to place fifth in the sophomore boys race in a time of 13:13.70.
The Blackhawks now enter Greater Spokane League competition, Sept. 25 at Mead with CV and G-Prep. "We will be at almost full strength," Slaughter said.
