Sports, clubs grow to record numbers
CHENEY – Student involvement in athletics and extracurricular activities at Cheney High School has experienced substantial growth, as reported by Athletic Director Ken Ryan during the Sept. 11 school board meeting.
This year, 221 students took part in summer conditioning, a dramatic increase compared to just 50 participants the previous year. Currently, 459 students are involved in fall sports, with a total of 621 students enrolled in athletic programs across the board.
“We’re seeing more kids getting involved,” Ryan stated. “Athletics give students a sense of belonging. Many students who find themselves in trouble aren’t part of clubs or sports. We offer numerous opportunities for them to engage.”
Cheney High School currently provides 19 summer youth camps and offers 21 different clubs for students to join. A recent club sign-up fair, held last Friday, gave students a chance to explore the variety of extracurricular options available to them.
In addition to increased participation, the school has made several improvements to its athletic facilities. New softball batting cages have been installed, updates were made to Hatch Gym, and the school’s social media presence has been ramped up to enhance school spirit.
As part of efforts to celebrate student achievements, eight new inductees were also announced for the Cheney High School Hall of Fame, further recognizing the hard work and success of student-athletes.
