Part of Second Street closed three months

City improves foot traffic

CHENEY – The city closed 2nd Street last Monday as part of its ongoing efforts to improve local infrastructure for pedestrians.

The Street will be closed to all traffic from B Street to Elm Street. The closure is scheduled to last through Nov. 11, with the primary focus being on the restoration of sidewalks in the area.

The project aims to enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility, addressing wear and tear in the current sidewalk system. The improvements are part of Cheney's broader initiative to create safer walking routes throughout the city, particularly in highly trafficked such as 2nd Street in the downtown area.

During the closure period, drivers are advised to plan for detours and use alternate routes. The city has emphasized that while the project may cause temporary inconvenience, it is expected to bring long-term benefits by making the sidewalks safer and more accessible for the community, especially for those with mobility challenges.

In preparation for the closure, Cheney Public Works will be coordinating with local residents and businesses to minimize disruptions.

Essential services, including garbage collection and emergency access, will continue as scheduled, though some adjustments may be necessary. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the project through the Cheney Free Press and city's official website.

As the project progresses, local commuters should anticipate possible traffic delays and are encouraged to allow extra time when traveling through nearby areas.
