Cheney VFW and Boy Scouts part of ceremony
MALDEN – The Pine Creek Community Restoration Long Term Recovery Organization, along with the residents of Malden, came together to celebrate the town's rebirth at the Pine Creek Fall Festival last Saturday.
Cheney Boy Scouts, Troop 356, and members of Cheney Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 11326, played key roles in the official ceremony. The Boy Scouts raised the American flag, while the veterans served as the color guard, adding a patriotic touch to the event.
Mayor Dan Harwood welcomed visitors and dignitaries, marking the celebration as a pivotal moment in Malden's journey of recovery. Much of the town had been devastated by the Babb Road Fire in September 2020.
"It was a day of destruction. It was chaos," recalled Malden resident Heather Mabie, reflecting on the tragedy. According to the Sheriff's Office, 80% of the town was consumed by flames in just two and a half hours during that Labor Day weekend.
Harwood noted that this celebration feels like a revival, as the community continues to rebuild. A new community center is under construction and will soon open, housing both a library and a food bank. Additionally, Malden Community Park is being revamped with new playground equipment.
The event was sponsored by the Innovia Foundation, which has been deeply involved in supporting Malden's recovery efforts and community events since the fire.
