Cheney’s parks facilities consist of 40.96 acres of recreation land with many options to choose from such as picnics, youth sports, tennis, exercise and swim. The downside is many of these facilities are facing all the problems older facilities do, deterioration, maintenance, noncompliance with safety standards and improvements as well as expansion as he city grows over the next 10-15 years.

The Blackhawks brought home three top-10 team finishes among the seven races at last Saturday’s 43-team Highlander Invitational on a sundrenched course at Shadle Park High School. The Cheney senior boys ran to a fifth-place finish, while the varsity girls and sophomore boys earned sixth-place finishes.

Eastern Washington University classified staff agreed to a new contract that would increase their wages 3.2 percent in the first year and 1.6 percent in the second.

The Medical Lake Planning commission was considering a zoning change that would allow more multi-family housing.

The Eastern football team, fresh off a 39-8 non-conference win over Central Washington University, was preparing to open Big Sky Conference play at home against Idaho State.

Sept. 22, 1994

Democrat Tom Foley edged his Republican challenger George Nethercutt 16,781-14,651 in the Sept. 20 primary election that drew just one in four eligible voters.

Figures released at a recent Cheney School Board meeting shared the increased interest of those in other districts choosing to drive to send their students to the district.

Quarterback Lance Hattemer completed 10 of 18 passes for 158 yards and three touchdowns as Cheney rolled over the Steveston High School from Richmond British Columbia.

Sept. 20, 1984

The Cheney City Council was to hold their second and final hearing on how to spend $23,663 in federal revenue sharing funds. In 1983 the city received $87,000 from the program.

Incumbent Fifth District Congressman tom Foley out-polled Jack Hebner 40,696-15,125 in the primary election results. John McBride and Keith Shepard won County Commissioner races.

Cheney High School scored a 20-17 nonleague victory over Riverside, improving to 2-0 in the young season. John Beauvais, Mike Spring and Bill Raunig scored for the Blackhawks.

Sept. 26, 1974

The Cheney School Board recommended that voters be asked to go to the polls in November and approve two separate bond measures. One would total $3.03 million for a new junior high school while the other $472,000 for remodeling at Sunset Elementary.

A stepped up effort to serve alcohol in the Pence Union Building was one of the items discussed at a recent meeting of the Eastern Washington State College board of trustees.

Medical Lake saw both its undefeated season string of shutouts come to an end at the hands of West Valley, 20-17 in a Frontier League football game played in Millwood.
