Graham looks to turn Blackhawks' around

CHENEY – Football begins travels down the trail led by former college coach John Graham on the local big stage at ONE Spokane Stadium.

Graham, a former assistant coach at both Central and Eastern Washington, was hired in February, replacing Bobby Byrd.

The Blackhawks seek to rebound from a winless (0-8 GSL, 0-10 overall) 2023 season when they open the 2024 Greater Spokane League season vs. Lewis and Clark, 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6 at ONE Spokane Stadium.

The Tigers beat Cheney 44-0 last year at Tom Oswald field on the way to a 3-5 GSL record and finished 5-5 overall.

Next up will be a visit from last year’s third-place finisher and playoff team, Ridgeline (6-2 GSL, 8-3 overall) from Liberty Lake on Sept. 13 for Cheney’s home opener.

Cheney will play three of its first five games at ONE Spokane including a Thursday, Sept. 19 meeting with Ferris (1-7, 2-8). The Blackhawks travel to defending champ G-Prep (8-0, 10-2), Sept. 27 before coming back to Spokane to face 2A Shadle Park (4-2, 8-2) in another Thursday contest, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m.

The Blackhawks close out the second half the season with three out of four games at home beginning with Central Valley (4-4, 4-6) on Oct. 11 and Mead (4-4, 5-5) Oct. 18.

Cheney travels to University (3-5, 4-6) Oct. 25 and closes the regular season, Nov. 1, hosting Mount Spokane (7-1,9-2).
