Teacher union, district agree to pact

Teachers to recieve 18% pay raise over next three years

CHENEY — The Cheney Education Association ratified a contract with the School District on Monday, averting a strike.

With the strike threat averted, students returned to campus for the start of the 2024-25 school year Tuesday.

The new contract includes an 18% salary increase over the next three years for teachers.

That includes a 7.2% raise in the first year, a 5% raise in the second year and a 5.8% raise in the third year.

Initially, teachers threatened to strike if they didn’t receive a wage increase. The union initially proposed 19.2% increase over the next two years.

The agreement, announced jointly by teacher union President Meridth Lemelin and schools Superintendent Ben Ferney, followed negotiations over a wage hike.

Both parties expressed satisfaction with the outcome, with 94% of members voting in favor.

“As we approach the start of the new school year, we are excited to move forward together,” the statement read. “Our collective focus remains on creating a positive, supportive atmosphere in which all students can learn at high levels and graduate with options for post-secondary education, careers, and civic engagement.
