Cheney, Airway Heights levies approved after vote

Results moving to general election

CHENEY – The Spokane County Elections Office has officially certified the results from the August 20 election, confirming that both the safety levy in Airway Heights and the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) levy in Cheney have passed.

The Airway Heights safety measure was approved by a narrow margin of 48 votes, finishing with 630 votes in favor and 582 against, representing 51.39% approval. Cheney’s EMS levy saw overwhelming support, passing by 1,103 votes, with 1,534 in favor and 431 opposed, translating to a 77.79% approval rate. These figures are consistent with the official results provided by Spokane County Elections.

In the race for State Representative, Position 2, in Legislative District 9, both Joe Schmick and Pam Kohlmeier are set to advance to the general election on November 5. Schmick led the primary with 11,329 votes, while Kohlmeier garnered 5,798 votes.

For Spokane Superior Court Judge Position 11, both Timothy Fennessy and Andrew Van Winkle will move on to the general election, with Fennessy receiving 47,720 votes and Van Winkle collecting 44,865 votes.

In the Spokane County Commissioner District 5 race, Al French and Molly Marshall will advance, with French securing 15,480 votes and Marshall close behind with 14,744 votes.

In races where only two candidates filed, both automatically move forward to the general election.

Voter turnout in Spokane County was 39.29%, with 144,832 of the 368,608 registered voters participating. This marks a decrease from the last primary election with a presidential race, where turnout was 49.72% with 169,821 of 341,570 registered voters casting ballots.

Voter demographics reveal that those aged 65 and older had the highest turnout at 67.3%, while the 18 to 24 age group had the lowest at 20.9%.
