City prepares 2025 state legislative agenda

AIRWAY HEIGHTS — The Airway Heights City Council was briefed on the city’s preliminary 2025 State Legislative Agenda during its August 19 meeting. The presentation by consultants Briahna Murray and Emily Shay outlined key priorities and the political landscape leading up to the 2025 legislative session.

With significant turnover expected in both the House and Senate, and a projected $500 million decrease in the state’s revenue for the current biennium, Shay said the city should plan to focus on a few top priorities. These include securing $1.3 million for land acquisition for a Public Safety Campus and addressing transportation funding shortfalls, particularly for the U.S. 2 corridor and related projects.

“All house members and about half the senate are up for election, and many are chooosing not to seek re-election,” Shay said. She also noted that democrats are “vying for a super majority in November.”

She mentioned that there are three initiatives to the legislature forwarded to the ballot: a capital gains tax, and paid family medical leave, and a potential ban on natural gas will all be put to a vote this November.

Murray mentioned that finances will “not be as rosy as they were before,” particularly in terms of funding for transportation, and that there will be a shortfall.
