PASCO - A prominent local attorney and community leader is headed to the November general election for Secretary of State.
At the end of ballot counting in the Tuesday, Aug. 6, primary election, Pete Serrano of Pasco led the three-candidate field.
"I am incredibly honored by your support tonight," Serrano said after the initial tally. "Your vote has made it clear that public safety is a top priority for Washingtonians. I am deeply grateful to my team, our volunteers, and every voter who placed their trust in me.
"With your continued support, I will run a campaign focused on restoring public safety, championing justice, and protecting Washington's families. Thank you again for your support."
Serrano, the Republican mayor, amassed 416,064 votes statewide. That's a healthy lead over the No. 2 candidate, Democrat Nick Brown, who had 356,851 votes. Redmond resident Manka Dhingra, known for her socialist politics, was a distant third with only 220,485 votes.
Franklin County voters overwhelmingly preferred Serrano, who received 6,243 local votes, or 68.27%.
In addition to being mayor, Serrano has been the director and attorney of an organization that sued Gov. Jay Inslee and the state over COVID-19 shutdown mandates and gun-control laws.
Only the Top 2 candidates advance to the November general election, the winner of which will replace Bob Ferguson, a Democrat running for governor.
Late-arriving ballots will be counted in the coming weeks, with the primary results set for certification Aug. 20.
"This Attorney General's race is a referendum on Washington leading the country in all the wrong things – crime and criminal activity," Serrano said after learning of his election domination. "Over the next three months, I will be crisscrossing the state sharing my vision and plan to restore Washington as a peaceful state, where law enforcement has every tool available to ensure criminal activity is halted and criminals are held accountable. As Washington's next Top Cop, I will make Washington Safe Again!"
