Cheney, Airway Heights saw favorable returns on propositions

68% ballots counted

SPOKANE COUNTY – On Tuesday, voters in Airway Heights and Cheney cast their ballots in favor of local propositions aimed at enhancing community services.

In Cheney, Proposition 1, which focuses on the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Levy, garnered robust support. With 75.5% of voters approving the measure, the final count was 639 in favor and 205 opposed.

This proposition is designed to ensure continued funding for emergency medical services, which are crucial for maintaining the high quality of healthcare and emergency response in the community.

Airway Heights saw a more closely contested vote for their Proposition 1, which seeks to address public safety needs by increasing the number of police officers.

Given the city’s recent growth, this measure aims to bolster the local police force to better serve the expanding population. The proposition passed with 52.7% of the vote, translating to 322 votes in favor and 289 against.

Both sets of results are preliminary, as the county continues to count ballots throughout the week. So far, out of 76,064 ballots that were cast, there is 24,000 ballots left to count, which means 68% of the ballots are counted according to the Spokane County Elections results.

The final results will be certified once all votes are tallied, but the early returns indicate strong community support for enhancing emergency services and public safety in both cities. The election must be certified by August 20.
