Fire on Mullen Hill closes Highway 195

SPOKANE — A brush fire near Highway 195 briefly closed the roadway in both directions Sunday evening, drawing a multi-agency response as firefighters battled the blaze.

The Mullen Hill fire was first reported at 5:48 pm near the intersection of South Mullen Hill Road, prompting the response of Spokane County Fire Districts 3, 8, 9, and 10, the Spokane Fire Department, and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

A temporary closure of Highway 195 was necessary to allow fire crews to tackle the flames safely. The DNR’s aerial response was initially delayed by a drone spotted in the area, but air support quickly resumed once the drone cleared.

Aerial resources were deployed, including four helicopters and two fixed-wing scooper aircraft, to assist in containing the fire.

As of Monday, crews were focused on addressing remaining hotspots and removing potential hazards in the fire’s interior. Mop-up activities are ongoing for full containment at the end of day.
