CHENEY — The Cheney School District is set to migrate to the Qmlativ system by July 2025, marking a significant upgrade in its data management capabilities.
The district’s migration plan was detailed during the July 17 school board meeting by Kassidy Probert and Justin Minden, emphasizing the extensive preparations involved in the transition.
Kassidy Probert outlined the timeline for the migration, which will see Cheney Schools moving to the new system alongside West Valley, East Valley, and Medical Lake school districts.
“We’ve got to get ready for the July 2025 kickoff date,” Probert said. He noted that the Qmlativ system has undergone significant improvements since its initial introduction in 2018.
Justin Minden, who was hired as a project manager in December 2023, described his role in ensuring a smooth transition.
Minden explained that he acts as a liaison between the districts and the Northeast Washington Information Service Center (NEWISC). Minden is responsible for monitoring and maintaining project timelines, as well as implementing key components of change management.
Minden highlighted the features of the Qmlativ system, designed to enhance user experience for both teachers and families.
“Teacher Access will be menu-based and tile-based, with live tiles that automatically update,” he explained. This system allows for greater customization and efficiency, with features such as grade sheets that resemble traditional spreadsheets but with added improvements.
The migration also includes comprehensive training for staff.
“Every teacher will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the new system before school starts,” Minden said, stressing the importance of adequate preparation.
He mentioned that some training days would be scheduled close to the start of the school year to make sure the information remains fresh.
Family and student access will also see significant improvements with the new system.
“Parents can organize tiles to suit their needs, adding and customizing them as necessary,” Minden noted.
One of the board members, Mitch Swenson, inquired about the costs associated with hiring a project manager. Minden assured the board that the cost would not increase due to his hiring.
